## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRCRAFT DITCHED IN BAY, NUMBER 1 ENGINE CAME APART IN FLIGHT. (.4)DURING CRUISE FLIGHT, THE NUMBER ONE ENGINE BEGAN TO MAKE NOISES. THE ENGINE THEN LOST TOTAL POWER. THE PILOT'S ATTEMPTS TO RESTART THE ENGINE WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO FEATHER THE PROPELLER. THE PILOT STATED, 'NOISE AND VIBRATION GOT STRONGER. SHUT DOWN NUMBER 1 [ENGINE]. PROPELLER WOULD NOT FEATHER....COULD NOT HOLD ALTITUDE OR AIRSPEED....' THE PILOT DITCHED THE AIRPLANE IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN NEAR SHADY SIDE, NEW JERSEY. THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST IN APPROXIMATELY 200 FEET OF WATER, AND WAS NOT RECOVERED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB BFO94LA124](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/BFO94LA124), Jun 30, 1994: Piper PA-30 (N7041Y), Sandy Hook, NJ, destroyed. Probable cause: The loss of engine power for reasons undetermined and the inability of the pilot to feather the propeller.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
