## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

LOST POWER ON CLIMBOUT. LANDED IN DEEP SNOW ON FROZEN LAKE. ICE CRYSTALS IN FUEL CAUSED FUEL STARVATION. (-23) AIRMAN DEPARTED STP PLANNING A ROUND ROBIN X-COUNTRY FLIGHT TO BRD & PKD. A TOUCH AND GO WAS EXECUTED IN BRD AND PKD. ON CLIMB OUT FROM PKD A LOSS OF POWER WAS NOTICED. THE AIRMAN APPLIED CARBURETOR HEAT BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO LOSE POWER. AIRMAN ATTEMPTED TO RETURN TO THE PKD AIRPORT BUT WAS UNABLE AND LANDED ON A FROZEN LAKE APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE WEST OF NEVIS, MN. BOTH WINGS WERE SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED DUE TO THE DEEP SNOW ON THE LAKE. THE PROP WAS DAMAGED AS WELL WHEN THE PLANE TIPPED UP ON ITS NOSE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI95LA110](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI95LA110), Feb 5, 1995: Cessna 172 (N739FZ), Nevis, MN, substantial damage. Probable cause: the loss of engine power due to a blockage caused by ice. A factor in the accident was the snow.

## Other reports on N739FZ (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19821110057999A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19821110057999A), Nov 10, 1982: Cessna 172N (N739FZ), Beulah, ND, Substantial damage. Engine lost power on takeoff. Landed in soft field off airport. No fuel found in strainer or carburetor.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
