## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT DEPARTED A PRIVATE AIRPORT ON WHEATON RD, NAPOLEON, MI AND CRASHED IN A MARSH ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF WHEATON RD FROM THE AIRPORT. ONE PERSON, SAM HOWARD, RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE PILOT, JOHN KNIGHT, STATED THAT HE DID NOT RETRACT THE FLAPS AFTER LANDING AND THE TAKEOFF WAS MADE WITH FULL FLAPS APPLIED. THE AIRCRAFT WOULD NOT CLIMB AFTER TAKE OFF AND SETTLED INTO THE MARSH. THE PILOTS STATEMENT WAS VERIFIED BY EXAMINATION OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE FLAPS WERE FULL DOWN AND JAMMED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI95LA135](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI95LA135), Apr 24, 1995: Cessna 150F (N8291S), Napoleon, MI, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's failure to retract the wing flaps prior to takeoff and the subsequent failure of the airplane to climb during takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
