## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AFTER DEPARTURE, DURING CLIMB ENGINE QUIT, AIRCRAFT CRASHED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LAND IN PASTURE. (-23) AIRCRAFT LOST POWER DURING CLIMB OUT FROM RUNWAY 27 AT BUTLER FIELD, ROCKVILLE, IN. WHILE MANEUVERING TO LAND IN AN ADJACENT PASTURE, AIRCRAFT STALLED AND RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE FROM GROUND IMPACT. LOSS OF POWER WAS CAUSED BY AN INCORRECT CYLINDER /PISTON/PISTON RING COMBINATION WHICH DEVELOPED EXCESSIVE HEAT, BEGAN TO SEIZE, AND POWER WAS REDUCED ACCORDINGLY. INVESTIGATION CONTINUES TO DETERMINE WHICH PART WAS INCORRECT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI95LA145](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI95LA145), May 2, 1995: Franklin EAA BI-PLANE/P1 (N3428), Rockville, IN, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's improper maintenance installation and his inadvertent takeoff. A factor was the pilot's inadequate pre-flight planning.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
