## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: THIS OIL COOLER IS PART OF A CERTIFIED ENGINE INSTALLATION IN A CESSNA 172M. DURING CRUISE FLIGHT, THE OIL COOLER RUPTURED IN THE AREA OF THE OUTPUT SIDE OF THE END TANK BETWEEN THE WELDED SEAMS ON THE COOLER. THIS CAUSED A RAPID LOSS OF ENGINE OIL AND EVENTUAL ENGINE FAILURE. DURING CRUISE FLIGHT FROM SAGINAW, MI TO PONTIAC, MI WHILE PASSING WITHIN 5 MILES FROM FLINT, MI AIRPORT, THE PILOT NOTICED A LOSS OF OIL PRESSURE. THE ENGINE STARTED KNOCKING AND AN EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED WITH THE FLINT TOWER. WHILE INBOUND TO FLINT ON A 2 MILE FINAL, THE ENGINE QUIT. A LANDING WAS MADE ON THE AIRPORT WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
