## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: USAIR FLIGHT 217, A BOEING B-737-300, FROM ATLANTA, GA (ATL) TO CHARLOTTE, NC (CLT), LANDED ON RUNWAY 18R AT CLT. AFTER TOUCHDOWN THE RIGHT SIDE, OUTBOARD MAIN LANDING GEAR TIRE BLEW OUT. THE EXPLOSION SEPARATED THE LOWER SECTION OF A LANDING GEAR DOOR (THE SECTION ATTACHED TO THE GEAR STRUT). THE FLIGHT CREW SAID THAT THEY DID NOT EXPERIENCE ANY SIGNIFICANT HANDLING DIFFICULTIES, AND THAT THE FIRST INDICATION TO THEM, OF A PROBLEM, HAD BEEN THE CALL FROM THE ATCT CONTROLLER. THE CONTROLLER SAW THE SMOKE AND RUNWAY DEBRIS, AND PROMPTLY TRANSMITTED TO THE CREW. THE PASSENGERS WERE DEPLANED WITH A STAIRWAY, AND THEN BUSSED TO THE TERMINAL. RUNWAY 18R TRAFFIC WAS DELAYED WHILE THE RUNWAY WAS CLEARED. THE BLOWN TIRE HAS BEEN RETAINED BY USAIR FOR ANALYSIS. INVESTIGATION AND CASE CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
