## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

LOST POWER. FORCED LANDING. MAGNETO COVER CAME LOOSE. CROSSFIRED. USING UNAPROVED DIRTY FUEL. NO FUEL STC. (-23) THE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED AN UNAPPROVED FUEL WAS BEING USED IN THE OPERATION. A FUEL SAMPLE DRAWN FROM THE STRAINER REVEALED WATER MIXED WITH SOME DIRT AND A STRAW COLOR. THE ENGINE INSPECTION PERFORMED FOUND THE LEFT MAGNETO COVER OFF THE MAGNETO BASE. OF THE FOUR SCREWS THAT HOLD THE COVER ON, ONLY ONE SCREW WAS FOUND AND IT HAD SHEARED OFF. WITH THIS COVER COMING LOOSE THE MAGNETO IS BELIEVED TO HAVE STARTED TO CROSSFIRE CAUSING THE ENGINE TO LOSE POWER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI96LA006](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI96LA006), Oct 11, 1995: Cessna 172F (N8740U), Danbury, WI, substantial damage. Probable cause: the partial failure of the left magneto, the road sign, and the road embankment. A factor relating to this accident is the brush which obscured the road sign.

## Other reports on N8740U (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19810525028659A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19810525028659A), May 25, 1981: Cessna 172F (N8740U), Boelus, NE, Destroyed. The pilot tried to take off from a short, unsuitable field. Did not have enough runway available.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
