## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON 11-11-95 AT APPROXIMATELY 1205 PST, N912BS, A LEON B. SMITH, JR., SONERIA II, OWNED AND OPERATED BY LEON B. SMITH JR., WAS ON A FAR 91 PLEASURE FLIGHT UNDER VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS THROUGH OUT ALL FLIGHT CONDITIONS AT AN ALTITUDE OF 1500 MSL OVER WOODVILLE, CA WHEN THE PILOT EXPERIENCED TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE. THE COMMERCIAL PILOT HAD NOT FILED A FLIGHT PLAN AND DID NOT HAVE A WEATHER BRIEF. THE PILOT, THE ONLY OCCUPANT, SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED AT PORTERVILLE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT AT APPROXIMATELY 1200 PST. THE PILOT CRASHED IN AN ALFALFA FIELD WITH MINOR DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. ANALYSIS DISCLOSED THE ENGINE DUAL COILS HAD OVERHEATED CAUSING INTERNAL FAILURE THAT RESULTED IN NO HIGH VOLTAGE OUTPUT TO THE SPARKPLUGS. THE SOURCE OF THE MALFUNCTION WAS TRACED TO THE ELECTRONIC TACHOMETER GROUNDING FAULT. THE NEGATIVE WIRES LEADING FROM BOTH COILS WERE CONNECTED TOGETHER THROUGH A SINGLE POLE SWITCH DIRECT TO THE ELECTRONIC TACHOMETER. THIS INCIDENT IS CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
