## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

FLYING IN HEAVY SNOW. LOST POWER IFR AT NIGHT. HIT TREES LANDING. ICED INDUCTION SYSTEM. FAILED USE ALTERNATE AIR. (-23) AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE CENTRAL WISCONSIN AIRPORT (CWA) BOUND FOR TULSA, OK AT APPROXIMATELY 1730 (LCL). ABOUT 45 MINUTES INTO FLIGHT, THE PILOT NOTICED A LOSS OF POWER FROM THE LEFT ENGINE. WHILE TRYING TO RESTORE POWER TO THE LEFT ENGINE, THE RIGHT ENGINE FAILED. ATTEMPTS TO RESTORE POWER TO EITHER ENGINE WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. PILOT MAINTAINED CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT UNTIL IT STRUCK THE TREETOPS AND CRASHED. THE PILOT WAS RENDERED UNCONSCIOUS AFTER HITTING TREES, BUT PRIOR TO IMPACT WITH GROUND.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI96FA052](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI96FA052), Dec 12, 1995: Piper PA-23-250 (N54791), Steuben, WI, destroyed. Probable cause: failure of the pilot to select alternate air. Darkness and snowy weather conditions were related factors.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
