## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: FLIGHT CREW REPORTED THAT JUST SHORTLY AFTER ROTATION, THE NUMBER 2 ENGINE BEGAN TO SURGE. EVEN WITH A POWER REDUCTION THE SURGING CONTINUED AND WAS REPORTED AS BECOMING UNCONTROLLABLE. A PRECAUTIONARY ENGINE SHUTDOWN WAS ACCOMPLISHED. AN EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED AND AFTER ALL APPLICABLE CHECKLISTS WERE COMPLETED, THE AIRCRAFT RETURNED FOR LANDING AT BENTON HARBOR, MI (BEH) WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS FERRIED BACK TO DETROIT WHERE MAINTENANCE DISCOVERED A MALFUNCTIONING HMU POT. THE ENTIRE HMU ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED, THE ENGINE WAS TESTED AND FOUND TO BE SATISFACTORY. A CONVERSATION WITH MESABA'S STATION MANAGER THE FOLLOWING MORNING INDICATED THE FLIGHT OPERATED WITH A FLIGHT CREW OF TWO, ONE CABIN ATTENDANT AND THREE PASSENGERS.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
