## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON JANUARY 22, 1996, A SMYTH SIDEWINDER (EXPERIMENTAL) N23ED OPERATED BY MR. ARTHUR R. LEWIS LANDED AT CHINO AIRPORT IN CA. ON LANDING, THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED. MINOR DAMAGE WAS DONE TO AIRCRAFT WITH NO INJURIES TO PILOT. NO LANDING GEAR DOWN AND LOCK INDICATION WAS OBSERVED IN THE COCKPIT. GEAR WAS VERIFIED DOWN AND LOCKED VISUALLY BY THE PILOT THROUGH AN INSPECTION WINDOW INSIDE OF AIRCRAFT. ANOTHER VISUAL INSPECTION WAS VERIFIED BY AIR TRAFFIC PERSONNEL AT CHINO TOWER. TROUBLESHOOTING WAS CONDUCTED ON THE LANDING GEAR SYSTEM. SYSTEM ANALYSIS REVEALED THE ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC MICRO SWITCHES THAT CONTROL OPERATION OF EXTENSION AND RETRACTION OF NOSE GEAR FAILED TO OPERATE AND LOCK GEAR IN PROPER POSITION. THIS INCIDENT IS CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
