## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON JANUARY 27, 1996, ALASKA AIRLINES FLIGHT 268 PORTLAND OREGON TO PHOENIX ARIZONA TAXIED OFF RUNWAY 28R. THE CAPTAIN WAS RETURNING TO THE GATE AREA FOR ADDITIONAL DE-ICING AFTER A PRE-TAKE OFF CONTAMINATION CHECK INDICATED THERE WAS TOO MUCH SNOW ACCUMULATION. THE AIRCRAFT RECEIVED INSTRUCTIONS TO TAXI BACK ON RUNWAY 28R AND TURN LEFT ONTO TAXIWAY ECHO. HOWEVER, HE HAD ALREADY PASSED THAT POINT. SUBSEQUENTLY HE RECEIVED INSTRUCTIONS TO TURN ONTO RUNWAY 02. AT THAT POINT DUE TO HEAVY SNOW AND POOR VISIBILITY HE TURNED ONTO THE UNPAVED SURFACE ADJACENT TO RUNWAY 28R. ALASKA MAINTENANCE SOLICITED THE AID OF THE PORTLAND AIR NATIONAL GUARD AND UNITED AIRLINES AND WERE SUCCESSFUL IN REMOVING THE AIRCRAFT. THEY PERFORMED A PORTION OF A HIGHDRAG/SIDE LOAD INSPECTION AND FOUND NO DEFECTS. THE AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNED TO SERVICE ON JANUARY 28, 1996. THIS REPORT IS CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
