## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON 02-08-96 AT APPROXIMATELY 2157 FLIGHT 684 LANDED PHL WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE AIRCRAFT TAXIED TO THE GATE AND WAS STOPPED TO POSITION THE JETWAY. WHILE DEPLANING PASSENGERS, THE CREW AND CABIN COMPARTMENT BEGAN TO FILL WITH A DENSE SMOKE. THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS WERE ORDERED TO IMMEDIATELY EVACUATE THE PASSENGERS BY THE FLIGHT CREW DUE TO THE DENSITY OF THE SMOKE. DURING THE EVACUATION A NORTHWEST AIRLINES EMPLOYEE OPENED THE OVERWING EXITS ALLOWING APPROXIMATELY 32 PASSENGERS TO DEPLANE ONTO THE LEFT AND RIGHT WINGS WHERE THEY WERE STRANDED FOR A WHILE WITHOUT ACCESS TO THE RAMP. IT WAS ALSO NOTED THAT A DOBBS CATERING TRUCK WAS USED TO GIVE ACCESS TO THE RAMP FOR THE PASSENGERS LEFT STRANDED ON THE WINGS. THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY 12-15 PASSENGERS THAT ESCAPED BY USING NORMAL DEPLANING MODES. THE EVACUATION WAS COMPLETED WITHOUT ANY REPORTED INJURIES. DURING FSDO-17 INVESTIGATION IT WAS NOTED THAT THIS AIRFRAME HAS A HISTORY OF 9 ATA CODES RELATED TO THE ABOVE INCIDENT. PLEASE SEE THE ATTACHED DOCUMENTS. THE ABOVE INCIDENT HAS BEEN FORWARDED TO THE CMO FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION. THIS MATTER IS CONSIDERED CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
