## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-16) THIS ACCIDENT WAS THE RESULT OF AN ENGINE THAT FAILED MECHANICALLY IN FLIGHT RESULTING IN A FORCED LANDING IN A SOFT FIELD THAT FLIPPED THE AIRCRAFT OVER CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE ENGINE IN THIS AIRCRAFT HAD BEEN RECENTLY OVERHAULED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC THAT FAILED TO PROPERLY TORQUE THE CONNECTING ROD BOLTS, WHICH RESULTED IN A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. FAILURE TO PROPERLY TORQUE THE CONNECTING ROD BOLTS IS CONTRARY TO CFR 14 PART 43.13(A). FURTHER, THE MECHANIC THAT PERFORMED THE OVERHAUL DID NOT COMPLY WITH AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE 91-14-22 ON THE CRANKSHAFT GEAR THAT WAS APPLICABLE AND DUE AT THE TIME OF THE OVERHAUL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW96LA116](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW96LA116), Feb 11, 1996: Cessna 172K (N7358G), Hedley, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: the failure of maintenance personnel to properly torque the connecting rod bolts. A factor was the lack of suitable terrain for the forced landing.

## Other reports on N7358G (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19860524059239I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19860524059239I), May 24, 1986: Cessna 172K (N7358G), Outing, MN. Engine lost power at cruise. Landed in a field. Found number 3 cylinder exhaust valve broken.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
