## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: AFTER TAKEOFF FROM RALEIGH-DURHAM INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (RDU), THE CREW WAS UNABLE TO RETRACT LANDING GEAR. RDU ATCT REPORTED THAT THERE WAS DEBRIS ON THE RUNWAY FROM ONE OF THE MLG WHEELS. THE CREW ELECTED TO CONTINUE TO CHARLOTTE/DOUGLAS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (CLT) DUE TO THE POOR WEATHER AT RDU AND THE FLIGHT WOULD ALLOW THEM TO BURN FUEL FOR LANDING. AIRPLANE MADE A FLYBY TO THE CLT TOWER. CLT ATCT CONFIRMED THE LEFT INBOARD TIRE WAS MISSING. AIRPLANE LANDED ON RUNWAY 18R AT CLT WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. ALL PASSENGERS WERE OFF-LOADED USING NORMAL PROCEDURES. INVESTIGATION REVEALED WHEEL HAD SUSTAINED HIGH TEMPERTURES, WHICH APPEARS TO HAVE CAUSED A SEPARATION OF THE OUTER WHEEL HALF ALLOWING THE WHEEL TO FALL OFF DURING TAKEOFF. AIRCRAFT HAD MAINTENANCE PERFORMED DURING R.O.N. BUT NO WORK WAS DONE TO WHEEL. LAST MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON THAT WHEEL WAS ON 12-22-95. USAIR ENGINEERING WAS DISPATCHED TO CLT TO INVESTIGATE THE WHEEL SEPARATION IN MORE DETAIL.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
