## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

REPORTED ENGINE BEGAN OVERHEAT. LANDED IN BEAN FIELD. WHEELS DUG INTO MUD. HOMEBUILT NOSED OVER. AUTO ENGINE. (-23) SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF, THE PILOT NOTICED THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE WAS OVERHEATING. HE CONTINUED TO FLY FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES BEFORE DECIDING TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING IN AN OPEN SOYBEAN FIELD. UPON LANDING AND DURING ROLL OUT THE AIRCRAFT HIT A SOFT SPOT AND THE AIRCRAFT'S NOSE WHEEL SUNK INTO THE MUD CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO FLIP OVER ON ITS BACK, CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD96LA051](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD96LA051), Mar 17, 1996: Mulholland Witchawk (N152JM), Celina, OH, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's selection of unsuitable terrain for a precautionary landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
