## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: WHILE DEPARTING FROM PIEDMONT TRIAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, GREENSBORO, NC THE CONTROL TOWER NOTICED FIRE IN THE ONE ENGINE. THE CREW WAS INFORMED AND DECLARED AN EMERGENCY. HE THEN RETURNED BACK TO GSO AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE AIRCRAFT THEN TAXIED ONTO USAIR MAINTENANCE HANGAR FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION. IT WAS LATER FOUND THAT SOMETHING INTERNALLY HAD FAILED ON THE PRATT AND WHITNEY MODEL JT8D-9A, S/N P674229B, ENGINE, AND THAT THE CASING WAS CRACKED ALL AROUND THE DIAMETER OF THE G FLANGE. THE ENGINE WILL BE SENT TO USAIR MAINTENANCE FACILITY AT PITTSBURGH, PA FOR A COMPLETE TEAR DOWN. ALSO, NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED TO THE CREW MEMBERS.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
