## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING LANDING, ENCOUNTERED STRONG CROSSWIND, LOST CONTROL OF AIRCRAFT DUE TO STRONG WINDS OVER TREES. (-23) DURING APPROACH TO RUNWAY 18, THE PILOT LOST CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT ON SHORT FINAL. WINDS WERE 120 DEGREES, GUSTING 15/22 KNOTS. THE PILOT WAS FASTLY OVERTAKING A LANDING AIRCRAFT WHICH WAS IN FRONT OF HIS AIRCRAFT. INORDER TO INCREASE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN HIS AIRCRAFT AND THE OTHER AIRCRAFT IN FRONT OF HIM, HE PERFORMED A SERIES OF LOW ALTITUDE (100-150 FEET) "S" TURNS. THESE "S" TURNS, PER WITNESS STATEMENTS, WERE AT A VERY HIGH ANGLE OF BANK APPROACHING 80-90. THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED OFF THE RUNWAY, 1,200 FEET DOWN AND 150 FEET LEFT OF THE RUNWAY THRESHOLD. A GO AROUND SHOULD HAVE BEEN EXECUTED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW96LA154](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW96LA154), Mar 24, 1996: Piper PA-38-112 (N9385T), Slidell, LA, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's failure to maintain aircraft control during the approach, and his failure to execute a go-around. A factor was the gusting wind.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
