## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AT APPROXIMATELY 1230 CDT ON 05/20/96, THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT IN N299MD INITIATED A PRACTICE ENGINE SHUTDOWN OF THE LEFT ENGINE. THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT REPORTED NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO RESTART THE LEFT ENGINE WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. THE INSTRUCTOR REPORTED THE AIRCRAFT WOULD NOT MAINTAIN ALTITUDE WITH ONLY THE RIGHT ENGINE OPERATING. THE AIRCRAFT WAS UNABLE TO REACH AN AIRPORT FOR LANDING AND AN EMERGENCY LANDING OFF AIRPORT WAS INITIATED. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AND ONE OF THE 3 OCCUPANTS RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES TO HIS FACE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW96LA221](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW96LA221), May 20, 1996: Piper PA-23-150 (N299MD), Paradise, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: THE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AND HYDRAULIC PRESSURE FOR REASONS UNDETERMINED. A FACTOR WAS THE LACK OF SUITABLE TERRAIN FOR THE FORCED LANDING.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
