## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON JUNE 1, 1996, AT APPROXIMATELY 1030 MST, GLASAIR III, N88SA, PILOTED BY MR. LYNN DOUGLAS BABCOCK, SKIDDED SIDEWAYS ALONG THE RUNWAY AT SCOTTSDALE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA WHEN ITS LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR WOULD NOT COME DOWN. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED MINOR DAMAGE TO ITS NOSE AND RIGHT MAIN GEAR, PROPELLER, FLAPS, LEFT WINGTIP, AND THE BOTTOM OF THE RUDDER. THE PILOT AND HIS WIFE, THE ONLY OCCUPANTS ABOARD THE AIRPLANE, WERE NOT INJURED. THE PILOT STATED THAT THEY HAD TAKEN OFF FROM SCOTTSDALE AIRPORT AT ABOUT 0930 MST ON JUNE 1, INTENDING TO LAND AT DEER VALLEY MUNICIPAL AIRPORT. THE LEFT MAIN GEAR WOULD NOT EXTEND, SO THE PILOT ELECTED TO RETURN TO SCOTTSDALE. HE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO EXTEND THE GEAR, INCLUDING USING EMERGENCY GEAR EXTENSION PROCEDURES. DURING HIS LANDING, HE HELD THE AIRPLANE ON ONE WHEEL UNTIL IT WAS SLOW ENOUGH TO SETTLE. THEN IT SKIDDED AT ABOUT 45 DEGREES TO THE RUNWAY, HIT A RUNWAY SIGN, AND CAME TO REST. INCIDENT CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
