## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: RECEIVED AN OCCURRENCE NOTICE FROM THE REGIONAL CONTROL CENTER THAT "AMERICAN TRANS AIR, FLIGHT 453, A B-757, DEPARTED MIDWAY AIRPORT AND RETURNED BECAUSE MAINTENANCE FORGOT TO TAKE THE GEAR PINS OUT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT AT 1332Z, 06/05/96." A FOLLOW-UP INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED AND IS IN PROGRESS. AIRCRAFT 755AT HAD BEEN IN THE HANGAR FOR MAINTENANCE AND WAS MOVED OUT FOR ENGINE RUNS, BEFORE IT WAS PULLED OUT THE GEAR PINS WERE INSTALLED TO EACH LANDING GEAR AND NO LOG ENTRY WAS MADE. WHEN THE ENGINE RUNS WERE COMPLETED THE AIRCRAFT WAS POSITIONED AT THE GATE READY FOR SERVICE. MAINTENANCE FAILED TO NOTICE THE INSTALLED GEAR PINS ON THEIR FINAL CHECK OF THE AIRCRAFT AND THE AIRCRAFT CREW MEMBER THAT CONDUCTED THE PREFLIGHT CHECK MISSED THE GEAR PINS. THE AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF AND RETURNED. THE PINS WERE REMOVED AND THE AIRCRAFT AGAIN DEPARTED WITH OUT INCIDENT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
