## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: WHILE CRUISING AT AN ALTITUDE OF 10,500 FEET MSL, PILOT WILLIAM B. SCOTT EXPERIENCED SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT. CANOPY WAS OPENED AND ALL TEMPERATURES AND PRESSURES CHECKED NORMAL. WITHIN SECONDS THE MAGNETIC CHIP LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF OIL WAS EVIDENT ON THE WINDSHIELD SO THE PILOT MADE A TURN BACK TOWARD THE SILVER SPRINGS, NV AIRPORT. AT THIS TIME THE ENGINE STARTED TO RUN ROUGH AND SEIZED. THE FUEL SELECTOR WAS TURNED TO OFF, PROP CONTROL WAS PULLED BACK, AND A WHEELS UP LANDING WAS EXECUTED ON A DRY LAKE BED AS THE SURFACE CONDITIONS WERE UNKNOWN. INVESTIGATION OF THE ENGINE REVEALED THAT THE NUMBER ONE CYLINDER HAD SEPARATED APPROXIMATELY 2 INCHES UP FROM THE BASE. THIS INCIDENT AND INVESTIGATION ARE CLOSED. THIS INCIDENT DID NOT INVOLVE A PILOT DEVIATION REPORT FORM 8020-17.

Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
