## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON JUNE 6, 1996, AT 10:18 A.M. EST AT APPROXIMATELY 5000 FEET ALTITUDE ARRIVING LANSING THE CREW NOTICED FLAMES COMING FROM THE AREA ADJACENT TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CENTER POST OF THE WINDSHIELD IN THE COCKPIT. THE FLAMES WERE EXTINGUISHED RAPIDLY WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. BOTH PILOTS AND ALL PASSENGERS DONNED OXYGEN MASKS. THE AIRCRAFT MADE A NORMAL LANDING AND TAXIED TO THE GATE. PASSENGERS WERE DEPLANED NORMALLY - NO INJURIES INVOLVED. INSPECTORS HAVE INTERVIEWED THE CREW AND REPORT A 13" SCORCH UP THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE COCKPIT WINDSHIELD CENTER POST, WITH THE COPILOT'S WINDSHIELD CRACKED. WE HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE INVESTIGATION BUT AT THIS TIME WE HAVE NO INDICATION THAT ANY OF THE FAA 9 RESPONSIBILITIES WERE INVOLVED. WE ARE AWAITING A REPORT FROM PIT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI96IA191](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI96IA191), Jun 6, 1996: Beech 1900 (N81538), Lansing, MI, incident, minor damage. Probable cause: the short in the windshield anti-ice low power braided copper lead wire caused a fire that had resulted from the manufacturer's inadequate design.

## Other reports on N81538 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19961125042139I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19961125042139I), Nov 25, 1996: Beech 1900D (N81538), Cleveland, OH. Propeller gauge went to zero. Replaced.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
