## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

RAN OUT OF FUEL ON NIGHT APPROACH. LANDED CITY PARK. STRUCK CHAIN LINK FENCE. FAILED REFUEL AT EN ROUTE STOP. (-23) ON JUNE 14, 1996 AT 16:30 MDT, AN AG-5B AIRCRAFT, N115JE, BEGAN AN IFR FLIGHT FROM STERLING, CO (STK) TO R.L. JONES AIRPORT (RVS), TULSA, OK. WITH AN ULTIMATE DESTINATION OF BOCA RITON, FLORIDA. THE PILOT DIVERTED TO HILL CITY, KANSAS DUE TO WEATHER AND CONTINUED THE IFR FLIGHT TO TULSA, OK AFTER A 1 1/2 HOUR WEATHER DELAY IN HILL CITY. WHILE CIRCLING FOR LANDING, TWO MILES NORTH OF RVS AIRPORT, THE ENGINE ON THE AIRCRAFT STOPPED RUNNING. TE PILOT SWITCHED FUEL TANKS, GOT A THREE SECOND RESUMPTION OF POWER AND THE ENGINE STOPPED AGAIN. THE PILOT MADE THE EMERGENCY LANDING INTO AN OPEN AREA, BUT HIT OBSTRUCTIONS INCLUDING A CHAIN LINK FENCE WHICH CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. THE PILOT AND ONLY OCCUPANT OF THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED NO INJURIES. INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT AFTER RECOVERY FROM THE CRASH SITE INDICATED THE RIGHT TANK CONTAINED NO VISIBLE FUEL, WHICH WAS THE TANK THE FUEL SELECTOR WAS ON. THE LEFT TANK HAD A SMALL AMOUNT OF VISIBLE FUEL, ESTIMATED TO BE NO MORE THAN TWO GALLONS.

Probable cause: the pilot's improper planning/decision, which resulted in fuel exhaustion and loss of engine power, due to an inadequate supply of fuel. Darkness was a related factor.
