## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

CRASHED ON TAKEOFF END OF THE RUNWAY INTO SOME TREES. (.4)WITNESSES REPORTED AN ABNORMAL AMOUNT OF BLACK SMOKE TRAILING FROM THE AIRCRAFT AFTER TAKEOFF. THE AIRPLANE SUBSEQUENTLY DESCENDED THROUGH TREES AND POWER LINES. POSTACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE ENGINE'S #1 CYLINDER DID NOT HAVE COMPRESSION WHEN CHECKED. AFTER THE INTAKE VALVE OF THE #1 CYLINDER WAS PRIED BACK, THE CYLINDER HAD COMPRESSION WHEN THE PROPELLER WAS ROTATED. THE #1 CYLINDER'S INTAKE AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD AREAS WERE DARKER IN COLOR THAN THOSE OF THE OTHER CYLINDERS. THE #1 CYLINDER'S VALVE SPRINGS WERE NOT WITHIN THE TOLERANCES AS LISTED BY THE MANUFACTURER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI96FA209](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI96FA209), Jun 22, 1996: Beech 23 (N2397J), Fulton, MO, destroyed, 2 fatal. Probable cause: the inadequate intake valve springs on the #1 cylinder.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
