## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: A PIPER PA-31, N223SA, DEPARTED SALT LAKE CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, UT AT APPROXIMATELY 0705 MDT, ON JUNE 26, 1996, AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER REPORTED SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT. THE AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO THE AIRPORT AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT AT APPROXIMATELY 0715 HOURS MDT. AN INVESTIGATION BY THIS OFFICE REVEALED THAT THE AIRCRAFT'S NAVIGATION/POSITION LIGHT WIRING HAD OVER-HEATED DUE TO A DEAD SHORT TO GROUND OF A STROBE LIGHT WIRE IN THE RIGHT WING. THIS IS A FINAL REPORT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
