## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON 06-28-96 AT APPROXIMATELY 2355 UTC, A HOT AIR BALLOON, OPERATED BY WILLIAM J. LYON, STRUCK A TREE ON APPROACH TO LANDING (STRIKING A TREE BY A BALLOON ON LANDING IS AN ACCEPTED METHOD OF SLOWING DOWN THE BALLOON). THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED OVER AN UNCONGESTED AREA WITH NEGATIVE DAMAGE TO PERSON OR PROPERTY. INCIDENT REPORTED TO STL AFSS 06-28-96, 0030 UTC WHICH IN TURN NOTIFIED STL-FSDO 06-29-96, 0333 UTC BY WAY OF A FAXED AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT/INCIDENT PRELIMINARY NOTICE. NO OTHER CIVIL ACTION IS KNOWN TO BE PENDING.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
