## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.4)THE PILOT CANCELLED HIS VFR FLIGHT PLAN DUE TO HEAVY WEATHER EN ROUTE AND RETURNED TO HIS DEPARTURE AIRPORT. HE USED FULL FLAPS DURING THE LANDING BECAUSE HE WAS HIGH ON FINAL APPROACH. JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN A GUST OF WIND PUSHED THE AIRPLANE OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT ADDED FULL POWER AND RAISED THE FLAPS TO 25 DEGREES TO GO-AROUND, BUT WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE. THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY WHERE IT IMPACTED TREES. THE PILOT REPORTED WINDS 300 DEGREES AT 13 KNOTS. (-23) SEE NARRATIVE #CHI96LA238.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI96LA238](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI96LA238), Jul 14, 1996: Piper PA-28 (N4798F), Lafeyette, IN, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's failure to maintain directional control during landing. Factors related to the accident were the pilot's inadequate compensation for the wind conditions and the crosswind.

## Other reports on N4798F (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19781112019509I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19781112019509I), Nov 12, 1978: Piper PA28140 (N4798F), Howell, MI, Minor damage. Student pilot ran off side of runway then struck a small ditch while taxiing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
