## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

COLLIDED WITH TREES SURVEYING FIELD TO BE SPRAYED. FAILED TO MAKE TIMELY PULLUP TO AVOID SAME. (-23) ON AUGUST 20, 1996 AT 1110 CDT, N904X STRUCK A TREE DURING A SWATH RUN AND MADE A FORCED LANDING IN A CORN FIELD, APPROXIMATELY 200 FEET FROM THE POINT OF IMPACT WITH THE TREES. THE IMPACT WITH THE TREE DAMAGED THE LEFT UPPER AND LOWER WINGS, AND THE RIGHT LOWER WING. THE SOLO PILOT SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AND THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI96LA310](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI96LA310), Aug 20, 1996: Grumman G-164A (N904X), Galesburg, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: failure of the pilot to maintain clearance from trees that protruded into the field that he was spraying.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
