## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: DURING TAKE-OFF ROLL APPROXIMATELY 300 FEET DOWN THE RUNWAY, THE AIRCRAFT'S NOSE LANDING GEAR BEGAN TO SHIMMY AND THEN COLLAPSED CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO NOSE OVER BREAKING THE WOODEN PROPELLER AND CAUSING THE ENGINE TO SUDDENLY STOP. PRIOR TO THE NOSE LANDING GEAR COLLAPSE THE AIRSPEED INSTRUMENT INDICATED 25 KNOTS. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST ON THE LOWER COWLING WHILE STILL ON THE RUNWAY WITHOUT CAUSING INJURY TO THE SOLE OCCUPANT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS AMATEUR-BUILT BY JOHN AND DALE HOLDEN FROM A KIT AND WAS ON ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT. THE NOSE LANDING GEAR IS A SOLID TUBE WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY A WELDED TUBE ENGINE MOUNT. THE ENGINE MOUNT FAILED ALLOWING THE SOLID TUBE TO FOLD UNDER AND AFT. THE ENGINE MOUNT DOES NOT APPEAR TO POSSES SUFFICIENT RIGIDITY FOR SUPPORTING A NOSE LANDING GEAR WITHOUT A STRUT TO ABSORB SHOCK LOADS. IT ALSO LACKS A SHIMMY DAMPENING DEVICE. THIS REPORT CLOSES THIS INCIDENT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
