## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRCRAFT CRASHED ON LANDING. (.4)THE STUDENT PILOT WAS ON HIS FIRST SOLO FLIGHT. THE FIRST FULL STOP LANDING ON RUNWAY 28 WAS WITHOUT INCIDENT. ON THE SECOND LANDING, A LEFT CROSSWIND RAISED THE AIRPLANE'S LEFT WING, AND THE AIRPLANE YAWED TO THE LEFT. THE STUDENT PILOT APPLIED RIGHT RUDDER, BUT WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE AIRPLANE EXITED THE RUNWAY AND COLLIDED WITH A DITCH. THE STUDENT PILOT AND THE OPERATOR REPORTED THAT THE AIRPLANE DID NOT EXPERIENCE ANY PREEXISTING MALFUNCTION OR FAILURE. THE SURFACE WINDS WERE REPORTED TO BE FROM THE SOUTHEAST AT 6 KNOTS, GUSTING TO 15 KNOTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX96LA314](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX96LA314), Aug 24, 1996: Cessna 172M (N64198), Truckee, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: the student pilot's inadequate compensation for the existing crosswind condition and failure to maintain directional control. The encounter with a ditch was a related factor.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
