## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON AUGUST 28, 1996 DELTA AIRLINES FLIGHT 2077 DEPARTED SANTA ANA, CA, ORANGE COUNTY AIRPORT TO SALT LAKE CITY, UT. ON TAKE OFF FROM RUNWAY 19R (MUSLE FIVE DEPARTURE) THE AIRPLANE SCRAPED THE BOTTOM OF THE AFT FUSELAGE ON ROTATION. THE FIRST OFFICER WAS FLYING THE AIRPLANE AND THE FLIGHT DECK CREWMEMBERS WERE NOT AWARE OF THIS SCRAPE (TAIL STRIKE). THE CREW CHANGED AIRPLANES AT SALT LAKE CITY AND CONTINUED TO FRESNO, CA, AND RENO, NV. AT FRESNO, ONE OF THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS ASKED THE CAPTAIN ABOUT THE "TAIL STRIKE" OUT OF SANTA ANA. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THE FLIGHT DECK CREW WAS AWARE OF THE TAIL STRIKE. THE CAPTAIN CALLED DELTA MAINTENANCE AND ADVISED THEM TO CHECK THE AIRPLANE THEY HAD FLOWN OUT OF SANTA ANA. THE AIRPLANE WAS AT SALT LAKE CITY AND IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE BOTTOM OF THE AFT FUSELAGE HAD MINOR SCRAPES AND MINOR DAMAGE TO THE AFT LAVATORY DRAIN MAST. THE FLIGHT DECK CREWMEMBERS WERE TAKEN OFF OF FLIGHT STATUS UNTIL THEY WERE GIVEN TRAINING AND A PROFICIENCY CHECK. THE PROFICIENCY CHECK WAS CONDUCTED IN A B-737-300 LEVEL C SIMULATOR AT SALT LAKE CITY AND OBSERVED BY FAA INSPECTOR MOONEY. THE PROFICIENCY CHECK INCLUDED A MUSLE FIVE DEPARTURE OFF OF RUNWAY 19R AT SANTA ANA WITH THE FIRST OFFICER FLYING THE AIRPLANE AND THE SIMULATOR CONFIGURED THE SAME AS THE TAIL STRIKE AIRPLANE INCLUDING THE WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE PROFICIENCY CHECK WAS SATISFACTORY AND THE CREWMEMBERS WERE RETURNED TO FLIGHT STATUS. DELTA AIRLINE'S PRESENT DEPARTURE PROCEDURE FROM SANTA ANA HAS THE PILOT AT VR MAKE A POSITIVE ROTATION TO A DECK ANGLE OF APPROXIMATELY 21 DEGREES. THIS PROCEDURE IS GOING TO BE AMENDED TO EMPHASIZE NORMAL ROTATION TO A DECK ANGLE OF APPROXIMATELY 21 DEGREES. THIS IS THE FINAL REPORT CONCERNING THIS INCIDENT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
