## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ROTATED TOO QUICKLY, BECAME MUSHY, VEERED TO RIGHT ON TAKEOFF, STRUCK GROUND ON ITS BELLY, SLID ACROSS ROAD. (-23) SEE ATTACHED AMARILLO-TRADEWIND AIRPORT LAYOUT. (.19) ON SEPTEMBER 6, 1996, AT 1215 CENTRAL DAYLIGHT TIME, A POLAND MIG 17, N1719, OPERATED BY A PRIVATE OWNER UNDER TITLE 14 CFR PART 91, IMPACTED A FENCE AND TERRAIN DURING TAKEOFF FROM TRADEWIND AIRPORT AT AMARILLO, TEXAS. THE COMMERCIAL PILOT RECEIVED SERIOUS INJURIES AND THE AIRPLANE WAS DESTROYED BY A POST IMPACT FIRE. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED FOR THE PLANNED CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT TO SHERMAN, TEXAS, AND A VFR FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. ACCORDING TO WITNESSES AT THE AIRPORT, DROP TANKS WERE INSTALLED ON THE AIRPLANE, AND THE DROP TANKS AND AIRPLANE TANKS WERE FULL OF FUEL. THIS WAS REPORTED TO BE THE PILOT'S FIRST FLIGHT WITH FULL DROP TANKS INSTALLED. DURING THE TAKEOFF ON RUNWAY 17, THE AIRPLANE WAS ROTATED AT AN ESTIMATED AIRSPEED OF 80 MPH AND THE TAIL CONTACTED THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE BECAME AIRBORNE, THEN IMPACTED THE GROUND, AND BOUNCED TO A STOP APPROXIMATELY 199 YARDS BEYOND THE DEPARTURE END OF THE RUNWAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW96LA377](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW96LA377), Sep 6, 1996: Pzl-Mielec MIG-17 (N1719), Amarillo, TX, destroyed. Probable cause: The pilot's excessive takeoff rotation which led to premature lift-off at a speed inadequate to maintain flight. A factor was the pilot's lack of experience in the MIG-17.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
