## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-16) THIS ACCIDENT WAS DETERMINED TO BE A PUBLIC AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT. THE INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED BY THE US FOREST SERVICE BY AGREEMENT WITH THE NTSB. THERE WAS NO FAA PARTICIPATION OTHER THAN NOTIFICATION. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE ANY OF THE FAA'S NINE RESPONSIBILITIES DUE TO LACK OF PARTICIPATION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA97TA012](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA97TA012), Oct 20, 1996: Garlick UH-1H (N98NW), Detroit, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's misjudgement of rotor clearance from the terrain. The proximity of the berm was a related factor.

## Other reports on N98NW (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19980519010199A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19980519010199A), May 19, 1998: Bell UH1H (N98NW), Hope, ID, Substantial damage. Squeal compressor stalls and smoke, flames from tail pipe. Lost all power and landed in clearing. Report to follow.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
