## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRCRAFT ENGINE QUIT ON DOWNWIND LEG TO RUNWAY AND AIRCRAFT LANDED SHORT OF RUNWAY. (-23) ENGINE FAILED WHILE ON BASE LEG TO RUNWAY AT TYR. PILOT SELECTED A FIELD TO LAND IN. HOWEVER, THERE WERE POWER LINES ABOUT 300 YARDS AT THE FAR END. HE PUT THE AIRPLANE ON THE GROUND TO GO UNDER THE POWERLINES. HIS SPEED WAS SUCH THAT A WATER DRAINAGE DITCH SENT HIM AIRBORNE AGAIN. THIS TIME HE LANDED IN SOFT DIRT WHICH CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO SOMERSAULT ONTO ITS BACK.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW97LA035](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW97LA035), Nov 3, 1996: Stinson 108-3 (N798C), Tyler, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: a loss of engine power due to failure of the crankshaft. A factor was the lack of suitable terrain for the forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
