NARRATIVE: ON NOVEMBER 7, 1996, AT 1246 PST, JACK JAAX, PILOT IN COMMAND OF N333WB, A MITSUBISHI MU-2B-26A AIRPLANE, WAS FORCED TO LAND AT AN ALTERNATE FIELD FOLLOWING AN UNSAFE GEAR INDICATION ON THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR. AFTER CYCLING THE GEAR HANDLE NUMEROUS TIMES, JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN HE OBTAINED A SAFE INDICATION. HOWEVER THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY HAD FAILED TO ROTATE INTO NORMAL POSITION AND WAS 90 DEGREES TO THE LATERAL AXIS OF THE AIRCRAFT. UPON TOUCHDOWN THE TIRE FAILED AND THE WHEEL/BRAKE ASSEMBLY WAS GROUND DOWN TO THE AXLE. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED NO OTHER DAMAGE. ON SCENE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR YOKE ASSEMBLY PN#010A-38371-012, FAILED AT THE UPPER GEAR POSITION ROD ATTACH POINT. PART MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED DURING EARLIER GEAR CONTACT WITH UNEVEN RUNWAY SURFACE. NEITHER JAAX NOR HIS 5 PASSENGERS SUSTAINED ANY INJURIES. MALFUNCTION OR DEFECT REPORT, FAA FORM 8010-4, SUBMITTED. THIS INCIDENT IS NOT RELATED TO A NMAC OR A PILOT DEVIATION.
