## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 189 PUSHED BACK FROM THE GATE, AND THE FLIGHT ATTEMPTED TO START THE RIGHT ENGINE OF THE B757. THE DRIVER OF THE PUSHBACK TUG NOTICED THE RIGHT ENGINE HAD VISIBLE FIRE AT THE TAILPIPE. THE CREW STOPPED THE START. IN THE CABIN A PASSENGER SHOUTED "FIRE" WHEN HE SAW THE FLAMES COMING FROM THE RIGHT ENGINE TAILPIPE, AND THE 11 PASSENGERS LEFT THEIR SEATS AND RAN TO THE FRONT OF THE AIRCRAFT. A FLIGHT ATTENDANT ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE LEFT FORWARD DOOR (L1) BUT THE SLIDE DID NOT DEPLOY, SHE THEN OPENED THE RIGHT FORWARD DOOR (R1) AND THE PASSENGERS DEPLANED ON THE R1 DOOR SLIDE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO THE PASSENGERS. THE CREW DID NOT EVACUATE SINCE THE CAPTAIN TOLD THE CREW THERE WAS NO DANGER. THE CAPTAIN DID NOT ORDER THE EVACUATION, SINCE THERE WERE NO ABNORMAL INDICATIONS IN THE COCKPIT DURING THE START. MAINTENANCE LATER REPLACED THE ENGINE FUEL FLOW GOVERNOR.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
