## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

BLEW A TIRE LANDING. LOST CONTROL. TRIED TO AROUND 90 DEGREES OF RUNWAY. UNABLE CLIMB. ABORTED. (-23) ON DECEMBER 1, 1996, AT 1037 MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME, A BELLANCE 17-30A AIRPLANE, N39812, WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED FOLLOWING A LOSS OF CONTROL WHILE LANDING NEAR RUIDOSO, NEW MEXICO. THE AIRPLANE WAS OWNED AND OPERATED BY A PRIVATE OWNER. THE PRIVATE PILOT AND HIS PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED FOR THE PERSONAL FLIGHT FOR WHICH A FLIGHT PLAN WAS NOT FILED. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED FROM SANTA TERESA, NEW MEXICO, AT 0815. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, DIRECTIONAL CONTROL WAS LOST WHILE ON THE LANDING ROLL FOR RUNWAY 24 AT THE SIERRA BLANCA REGIONAL AIRPORT, NEAR RUIDOSO, NEW MEXICO. THE PILOT ADDED THAT AFTER THE AIRPLANE LEFT THE RUNWAY, HE ATTEMPTED TO NO AVAIL TO ABORT THE LANDING. EXAMINATION OF THE AIRPLANE REVEALED THAT ALL 3 LANDING GEARS COLLAPSED AND SEPARATED FROM THE AIRFRAME AND BOTH WINGS SUSTAINED STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. THE PILOT FURTHER STATED THAT "THE WINDS AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT WERE RIGHT DOWN THE RUNWAY, AND THEREFORE NOT A FACTOR."

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW97LA053](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW97LA053), Dec 1, 1996: Bellanca 17-30A (N39812), Ruidoso, NM, substantial damage. Probable cause: failure of the pilot to maintain directional control during landing roll, and his delayed aborted landing. The gusty crosswind and blown left main tire were considered to be related factors.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
