AIRCRAFT LANDED IN A FIELD AND RAN THROUGH FENCES, COLLAPSING NOSE GEAR AND SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGING AIRCRAFT. ENGINE EXAM REVEALED AN INTERNAL ENGINE PART HAD BROKEN LOOSE AND EXITED THROUGH ENGINE CASE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI97LA050](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI97LA050), Dec 19, 1996: Piper PA-46 (N446RD), Red Oak, IA, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's inadequate preflight and failure to make a precautionary landing. Additional factors included oil starvation and the failed connecting rod and rod bearing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
