## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-16) THE ACFT IN QUESTION WAS AT CRUISE ALTITUDE WHEN IT WAS STRUCK BY CLEAR AIR TURBULENCE (CAT). THERE WAS NO SIGMET FOR CAT AND NOTHING IN THE AMERICAN AIRLINES WX PACKAGE TO INDICATE THAT SUCH A CONDITION SHOULD BE EXPECTED. THE PILOT REPORTED THE SITUATION TO DISPATCH AND ATC IAW APPLICABLE FARS AND COMPANY PROCEDURES. ATC ROUTED OTHER AIRCRAFT AWAY FROM THE AREA WHERE THE CAT WAS ENCOUNTERED. THERE WERE NO OTHER INSTANCES REPORTED BY OTHER AIRCRAFT. A TOTAL OF SIX INJURIES, ONE SERIOUS (A BROKEN ANKLE) EXPERIENCED BY A CREW MEMBER AND THREE MINOR INJURIES EXPERIENCED BY THREE OTHER FLIGHT ATTENDANTS AND TWO MINOR INJURIES SUSTAINED BY PASSENGERS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC97LA040](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC97LA040), Jan 7, 1997: Airbus Industrie A-300B4-605R (N50051), Atlantic Ocean (Atlantic Ocean), minor damage. Probable cause: an encounter with unforecast clear air turbulence and the flight attendant's failure to use the seat belt.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
