## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: SUMMARY OF FINDINGS; RECEIVED AN AIR CARRIER INCIDENT REPORT FROM THE ABQ ARTCC ON MARCH 9, 1997. THE REPORT IDENTIFIED CONTINENTAL AIRLINES FLIGHT 1529, N35832, MD-80, ENROUTE FROM HOU INTERNATIONAL TO LAS VEGAS, NV, ON MARCH 8, 1997, DIVERTED TO ABQ, NM DUE TO A #2 ENGINE OIL QUANTITY WARNING LIGHT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. INVESTIGATION OF THE INCIDENT REVEALED THAT THE PILOT REPORTED TO AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL THAT HE WAS INDICATING A STEADY LOSS OF OIL QUANTITY ON THE #2 OIL QUANTITY INDICATOR, ABOUT 8 QUARTS PER HOUR. AFTER LANDING AT ABQ, WITH NUMBER 2 ENGINE STILL RUNNING, HE HAD 4 QUARTS OF OIL LEFT. ASI CONTRACTOR LOOKED AT THE ENGINE AND COULD NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE AIRCRAFT'S FLIGHT WAS CANCELED AND THE PASSENGERS WERE RE-ROUTED. CONTINENTALS MAINTENANCE FACILITY IN HOU FLEW A CREW OF 4 MECHANICS INTO ABQ TO ACCESS THE PROBLEM. ON MARCH 9, 1997, THE AIRCRAFT WAS FERRIED TO CLEVELAND, OH WHERE THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED. MECHANICS FOUND THE #6 BEARING OIL PUMP SEAL LEAKING. THEY REPLACED THE GAR LOCK SEAL, FILLED THE OIL RESERVOIR AND LEAK CHECKED THE SYSTEM. CONTINENTAL IS CLOSELY MONITORING THE SYSTEM TO ENSURE THERE ARE NO FURTHER LEAKS.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
