## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON APPROACH TO DFW AIRPORT, AS THE AIRCRAFT DESCENDED THROUGH 11,000 FEET AND FLAPS WERE EXTENDED TO 15 DEGREES, THE FLIGHT CREW FELT AND HEARD A "LOUD BANG". EXAMINATION OF THE AIRPLANE REVEALED THAT THE INBOARD 16 FEET OF THE RIGHT OUTBOARD FLAP ASSEMBLY HAD SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE OUTBOARD 8 FEET SECTION OF FLAP AND FLAP CARRIAGE REMAINED WITH THE AIRPLANE. THE INBOARD FLAP CARRIAGE ALSO REMAINED ATTACHED TO THE AIRPLANE. THE SIX (6) INBOARD FLAP ATTACH BOLTS WERE RECOVERED AND RETAINED BY THE NTSB FOR METALURGICAL EXAMINATION. THIS INCIDENT IS CLOSED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW97IA144](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW97IA144), Mar 27, 1997: Boeing 767-232 (N105DA), Dfw Airport, TX, incident, minor damage. Probable cause: The manufacturer's improper installation of the flap, which resulted in fatigue cracking of the flap attach bolts and separation of the flap.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
