## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: WHILE PRACTICING STALLS, THE PILOT EXPERIENCED AN UNUSUAL RPM DROP AND ROUGH ENGINE WHEN POWER WAS REDUCED AND CARB HEAT PULLED ON. WHILE AIRCRAFT WAS CLIMBING BACK TO A BASE ALTITUDE OF 2,000 FEET, THE ENGINE BEGAN VIBRATING AND SMOKING. THE PILOT PULLED CARB HEAT AND THROTTLE TO IDLE, SET BEST GLIDE SPEED, AND TURNED TOWARD THE BIGGEST FIELD IN SIGHT. AIRCRAFT LANDED IN A WHEAT FIELD. NO OTHER MALFUNCTIONS OR DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. INVESTIGATION DETERMINED THAT THE NUMBER THREE CYLINDER HAD CRACKED 90% AROUND THE FIN AREA. THE CRACK WAS THREE FINS UP FROM THE CYLINDER HOLD DOWN FLANGE. THE OPERATOR IS TO SUBMIT A MALFUNCTION AND DEFECT REPORT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
