JENKINS WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE AIRCRAFT, HE WAS FLYING THE AIRCRAFT WITHOUT A PILOT CERTIFICATE. HE HAD A RATED PILOT, ZACHRY MARCHANT WITH HIM WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. MR. Z MARCHANT DID NOT KNOW THAT MR. JENKINS DID NOT HAVE A PILOT'S CERTIFICATE (MR. MARCHANT IS A RATE PILOT). AFTER SPEAKING TO MR. JENKINS ON THE PHONE FORM HIS HOSPITAL ROOM ON 05/09/97, HE SAID HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FLIGHT AND THAT MR. MARCHANT WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE. THE AIRCRAFT WAS ATTEMPTING TO TAKE OFF WHEN THE ENGINE QUIT. PROBABLE CAUSE IS ENGINE ICING. AIRCRAFT CRASHED AS THE OPERATOR ATTEMPTED A 180 DEGRE TURN FROM APPROXIMATELY 100-200 FT AGL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL97LA065](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL97LA065), Apr 29, 1997: Piper PA-28-180 (N4979L), Hazelhurst, GA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The loss of engine power for undetermined reasons. Factors were, conditions were favorable for the formation of carburetor ice, and the pilot lack of qualification for the flight.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
