## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.4)THE PILOT AND PILOT-RATED PASSENGER FAILED TO RETURN FROM A LOCAL SCENIC FLIGHT. RADAR DATA WAS OBTAINED FOR AN AIRCRAFT THAT DEPARTED ABOUT THE SAME TIME AS THE ACCIDENT AIRCRAFT. IT WAS OBSERVED IN AN AREA KNOWN TO BE A PRACTICE AREA OF THE OWNER/PILOT. WITNESSES SAW AN AIRCRAFT CRASH INTO THE PACIFIC OCEAN WHILE MANEUVERING IN THAT AREA NEAR THE TIME OF FLIGHT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS NOT FOUND, AND THE INJURIES ARE PRESUMED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX97LA173](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX97LA173), Apr 29, 1997: Shoaf Christen Eagle II (N61GS), Half Moon Bay, CA, destroyed, 2 fatal. Probable cause: undetermined.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
