## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.4) THE PRIVATE PILOT'S INITIAL LANDING ATTEMPT RESULTED IN A GO AROUND ON THE 1,845 FOOT LONG RUNWAY, WITH A 278 FOOT DISPLACED THRESHOLD AND A GREATER THAN 2% DOWNWARD INCLINE STARTING AT MIDFIELD. ON HIS SECOND ATTEMPT, THE PILOT ESTIMATED THE TOUCHDOWN POINT WAS ABOUT 300 FEET FROM THE NUMBERS, AND THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED TO THE END OF THE RUNWAY EVEN WITH CONSTANT BRAKING. THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION INSPECTOR REPORTED THAT THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT MIDFIELD, AND DRIFTED OFF THE RUNWAY DURING ROLLOUT. BRAKING WAS ATTEMPTED WITH ONE WHEEL ON THE PAVEMENT AND THE OTHER WHEEL ON THE GRASS. THE BRAKES WERE LOCKED AS THE AIRPLANE WENT OFF THE RUNWAY, DOWN THE EMBANKMENT, AND FLIPPED OVER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD97LA072](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD97LA072), May 5, 1997: Cessna 172H (N3748F), Westminister, MD, destroyed. Probable cause: The pilot misjudged landing distance on the runway and his failure to perform a go-around.

## Other reports on N3748F (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19810502027379I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19810502027379I), May 2, 1981: Cessna 172H (N3748F), Methuen, MA, Minor damage. During water taxi aircraft sank due to damaged float. Float damaged due to improper winter storage.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
