## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

BOUNCED LANDING. ADDED POWER BUT HIT RUNWAY AND FLIPPED OVER. DAMAGED AIRFRAME AND FIREWALL. (-23) ON MAY 18, 1997 AT APPROXIMATELY 0915 EST, A CESSNA MODEL 172, N5685E WAS INVOLVED IN A CROSSWIND LANDING ACCIDENT AT THE ANGOLA TRI-STATE AIRPORT (ANQ). THIS AIRCRAFT WAS PILOTED BY PRIVATE PILOT ERIC A. MANSFIELD. MR. MANSFIELD HAD TWO PASSENGERS WITH HIM ON THIS FLIGHT. MR. MANSFIELD REPORTED THAT DURING HIS LANDING THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED BACK INTO THE AIR. DURING HIS RECOVERY HE STATED THAT HE ADDED POWER AND RAISED THE FLAPS. HE REPORTED HEARING THE STALL WARNING HORN AND LOWERED THE NOSE TO BUILD AIRSPEED. HE INDICATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE GROUND BEFORE AN INCREASE IN AIRSPEED COULD BE OBTAINED. THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED OVER AFTER HITTING THE GROUND. ONE PASSENGER WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL AND TREATED FOR WHAT WAS REPORTED AS A BRUISE TO THE CHEST. THE AIRCRAFT RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRFRAME AND THE FIREWALL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI97LA135](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI97LA135), May 18, 1997: Cessna 172N (N5685E), Angola, IN, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's improper recovery from a bounced landing. Factors associated with the accident were the tailwind, the pilot's selection of runway, and the misjudged landing flare.

## Other reports on N5685E (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19900428013199A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900428013199A), Apr 28, 1990: Cessna 172N (N5685E), Angola, IN, Substantial damage. Veered off the runway landing in a gusty crosswind and nosed up in a ditch.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
