## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING THE TAKEOFF INITIAL CLIMB, APPROXIMATELY 30 FEET AGL, THE AGRICULTURAL AIRPLANES ENGINE LOST POWER. THE PILOT PULLED BACK ON THE CONTROL STICK AND INTENTIONALLY STALLED THE AIRPLANE IN ORDER TO PREVENT IT FROM NOSING OVER ON TOUCHDOWN IN THE SOFT FIELD. THE HARD LANDING RESULTED IN THE COLLAPSE OF BOTH MAIN LANDING GEAR. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE AND THE PROPELLER REVEALED NO PRE-IMPACT DISCREPANCIES WHICH WOULD HAVE PRECLUDED NORMAL OPERATION. (-23) PILOT REPORTED THAT THE ENGINE LOST POWER JUST AFTER TAKEOFF. HE WAS UNABLE TO REMAIN AIRBORNE AND CRASH LANDED IN A WHEAT FIELD ADJACENT TO THE AIRPORT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW97LA228](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW97LA228), Jun 18, 1997: Rockwell S-2R (N4859X), Pond Creek, OK, destroyed. Probable cause: loss of engine power for undetermined reason(s). A factor relating to the accident was: the lack of suitable terrain for a forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
