## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON TAKEOFF FROM GRASS STRIP DID NOT REACH SPEED. ABORTED , SKIDDED ON WET GRASS OFF EDGE OF RUNWAY, HIT A TREE. (.4) THE PILOT CONDUCTED A TAKEOFF FROM A 2,300 FOOT LONG RUNWAY, WITH 3 INCH HIGH WET GRASS. THE PILOT INCORPORATED SHORT FIELD TAKEOFF TECHNIQUES AND USED 25 DEGREES OF FLAPS. DURING THE TAKEOFF ROLL, FLYING SPEED WAS NOT OBTAINED, AND THE PILOT ELECTED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF. DURING THE ABORTED TAKEOFF, THE PILOT APPLIED BRAKES AND RETRACTED THE FLAPS; HOWEVER THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED DOWN THE WET GRASS, CONTACTED A DITCH AND IMPACTED A TREE. EXAMINATION OF THE WRECKAGE BY THE FAA INSPECTOR DID NOT DISCLOSE ANY EVIDENCE OF MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS, NOR DID THE PILOT REPORT ANY. (-23) PILOT, WITH ADULT SON AS PASSENGER, WAS ATTEMPTING TAKEOFF ON PRIVATE STRIP. RUNWAY DIRECTION WAS SOUTH, WITH 4% UPGRADE ON WET GRASS. SOIL WAS WET, BUT NOT SATURATED, AND WAS STILL FIRM. AIRCRAFT WAS NOT YET AIRBORNE WHE IT REACHED THE PILOT'S PREDETERMINED DECISION POINT, SO HE ABORTED TAKEOFF BY CLOSING THROTTLE, APPLYING BRAKES, AND RAISING FLAPS. HE ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE AIRCRAFT LEFT ABOUT 20 DEGREES TO GO UPSLOPE TO FURTHER SLOW THE AIRCRAFT. AIRCRAFT YAWED LEFT BUT CONTINUED ORIGINAL GROUND TRACK. NOSE WHEEL STRUCK A CULVERT AND FOLDED BACK UNDER THE AIRCRAFT. RIGHT WING STRUCK A SMALL TREE AT MID-SPAN AND WAS TORN FROM THE AIRCRAFT. NO INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC97LA122](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC97LA122), Jun 19, 1997: Piper PA-28-181 (N2111G), Manchester, KY, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's delay in aborting the takeoff. A factor in the accident was the high, wet grassy runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
