## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: AT APPROXIMATELY 1400 LOCAL ON JUNE 28, 1997, A PARACHUTE DROP WAS EXECUTED FROM THE SEATTLE CLASS B AIRSPACE OVER THE COMMUNITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON. DURING HIS DESCENT, THE PARACHUTIST CUT AWAY FROM HIS MAIN PARACHUTE AND DEPLOYED HIS EMERGENCY RESERVE PARACHUTE. THE PARACHUTIST IMPACTED A SOFT FIELD AT A HIGH RATE OF DESCENT AND SUSTAINED SERIOUS INJURIES. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE RESERVE PARACHUTE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED/REPACKED WITHIN REQUIRED TIME FRAMES. IT WAS ALSO DETERMINED THAT THE OPERATION MAY HAVE REQUIRED A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHORIZATION ISSUED BY SEA FSDO AND THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS ALTERED WITHOUT APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTATION.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
